KPFF Consulting Engineers, an industry leader in structural and civil engineering and protective design services, has been contracted to provide structural engineering services for Dekalb Commons, an affordable housing development located at 633-639 and 648-654 Dekalb Avenue in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn. Magnusson Architecture and Planning PC designed the two 40,000 SFfacilities that stand seven stories tall and contain40units, as well as a third mixed-use building that stands four stories tall and contains 8,000 SF of space.
“Dekalb Commons is an anNYSERDA Building of Excellence winning development,” said Spiro Kremmidas, Principal of the theKPFF New York office.“The designation comes with the reduction in global warming potential in the building materials that were carefully considered when planning this project.”
The project will provide new housing options for local residents who are being displaced–an issue of particular importance over the past few years. Additionally, KPFF has also implemented embodied carbon reduction measures that create a sustainable community, thereby also helping New York City in its battle against climate change.
This passive house-certified project meets low energy standard performance requirements, leading the way for affordable housing communities in and around New York City. Because of these efforts, Dekalb Commons serves as an example for buildings striving for net-zero operational energy generation.
