Numerous Gunnison teams and Gunnison-developed systems were responsible for the processing and packaging that led to the successful March, May, and August Post Enumeration Survey (PES) data releases by the U.S. Census Bureau. The survey measures the accuracy of the census by independently surveying a sample of the population, but its results could also be used to improve the coverage of future censuses.
The Gunnison-developed Listing and Mapping Application (LiMA) and Mobile Case Management (MCM) systems were used to collect both the Census and PES address and unit data for the 2020 Census. The team developed sophisticated normalization and computer matching of the Census to PES, while a Clerical Matching and Map Update application (also developed by Gunnison) provided Census clerical matchers a user interface to identify data matches/mismatches between the Decennial and PES operations.
All these systems handled hundreds of millions of person and unit records, were up to 30 times faster than legacy systems, and often obtained sub-second query performance.
Furthermore, Gunnison developed complex SAS code that efficiently created person-level and unit-level files consisting of hundreds of billions of data cells, while designing and developing general use SAS and custom SAS software for PES that ingested person-level and unit-level files, creating dozens of xml files and data tables suitable for dissemination on data.census.gov.
