It was a vision. Seven hundred of Miami’s real estate professionals gathered at the JW Marriot Marquis Hotel in Downtown Miami on September 15th to honor Thomas P. Murphy Jr. and his family members as they received the prestigious 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award from The Urban Land Institute Southeast Florida/Caribbean. The Urban Land Institute’s mission is to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide.
Anthony Graziano, CEO of Integra Realty Resources, serving as the master of ceremonies presented the award recognizing Tom Murphy Jr. and his nine family members on stage: Mike Murphy, Tom C. Murphy, Sean Murphy, Thomas P. Murphy Jr., John Murphy, Patrick Erin Murphy, Blake Murphy, John Murphy Jr., Ken Fabel, and Jason Anderson for their decades of work building transformative projects that have helped reshape the South Florida skyline.
Not surprisingly, Coastal also built the Miami Design District, which took home the honors that evening with the 2020 Project of the Year Award (awarded post-pandemic).
As part of the annual awards ceremony, ULI also praised Alex Bogdanoff with the Young Leader Award and River Landing Shops & Residences with the 2022 Project of the Year award.
Murphy Jr.’s legendary story began as a humble carpenter and college drop-out who earned his contractor license at age 19. The youngest person in Florida ever to do so. Against all odds, he catapulted his modest first venture, Murphy Construction, to form Seaboard Construction with more than 1500 employees before selling it to the largest contractor in the U.S, Turner Construction. Having grown restless after the sale, he founded Coastal Construction, which today, 54 years after his first project, has become one of the largest general contractors in Florida.
The company has built more than 50 million square feet of vertical projects including hospitality, multi-family, single-family luxury homes, public and private schools, as well as commercial and mixed-use projects. The company has more than $3.5 billion in current work, and a 3‐year pipeline of approximately $12 billion with operations in Miami, Palm Beach, Naples, Orlando, Tampa, and the Florida Keys.
“It was a night we will never forget. We are so grateful to ULI for this tremendous honor which pays tribute to not only the Murphy family but the hundreds of Coastal Construction team members whose dedication and hard work helped get us where we are today,” said Thomas P. Murphy, Jr. Chairman and CEO of Coastal Construction Group.
The family joins previous Lifetime Achievement Award recipients including: Craig Robins, Bernardo Fort Brescia & Laurinda Spear, Ricardo Glas & Luis Pulenta, Stephen Owens, The Legacy of Tony Goldman, The Whitman Family, The Graham Family, Armando Codina, and Jorge Perez among others.
