Twenty-one schools in Broward and Palm Beach vie for the honors
The Critics’ Awards Program, or Cappies for short, celebrates outstanding achievement in high school theater on Tuesday, May 23at 7 p.m. in the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, where the program was launched more than two decades ago.
Nominees from 21 schools in Broward and Palm Beach will compete for the awards in 47 categories recognizing performers, designers, technicians, publicists and critics.
Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Cappies Awards will feature songs and scenes from the top-nominated shows. This year, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School leads the field with 21 nominations consisting of four nominations for criticism and 17 for its production of Head Over Heels, which ties for the most nominated musical with Coral SpringHigh School’s production of In the Heights. South Plantation High School’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream received 14 nominations to become the most nominated play.
Cappie Award winners are determined by votes from students through a weighted peer-review voting process. Nominations are made by student critics from participating schools who attend productions at rival schools and write reviews, which then are edited by theater educators and published on FloridaTheaterOnStage.com.
General admission tickets are $25. Ticketmaster is the only official ticketing service of the Broward Center and Parker Playhouse. Buy tickets online at BrowardCenter.org, or Ticketmaster.com; by phone at 954.462.0222 or in person at the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office.
