Beloved Employee at Rio Las Palmas Spends Over A Decade Bringing Local Kids Together in Community

Local Hero Herman Beer of Five Star Community in Northern California Meets Youth with Care Through Annual Kids Matter Event in Stockton, CA.

Every year, the Stockton community gathers at Morelli Park for a heartwarming event organized by local hero Herman Beer of top-ranked senior living community, Rio Las Palmas. The annual event is held by the nonprofit organization called Kids Matter, an over decade long program that Herman has been dedicated to providing a memorable day of fishing and outdoor activities for children in the area, and Saturday, May 18, 2024 marks the 12th anniversary of his beloved tradition.

The event, which has become a cherished annual occurrence, brings together a group of excited youngsters who are treated to a day of fishing fun. Herman works with organizations in the area who generously supply the fishing poles and bait, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience the joy of fishing. The United States Coast Guard also joins in on the festivities, adding to the excitement with their presence at the waterfront.

Herman’s dedication to Kids Matter is evident in the collaborative effort it represents. The First Baptist Church generously provides meals for the children, ensuring that they are well fed throughout the day. Any leftover food is thoughtfully donated to a local homeless shelter, embodying the spirit of giving back to the community. Furthermore, Herman’s commitment to ensuring that every child has access to fishing equipment is truly remarkable. With the support of Bass Pro, who generously donates used reels, Herman refurbishes and equips them with new lines, adding to his impressive collection of 600 fishing poles.

“I’ve been fishing for 51 years, and it’s become my passion,” says Herman. “Kids Matter is not only an excuse for me to indulge in my favorite hobby but also a way for me to share that passion with the kids in our community. It’s amazing to see how everyone comes together to make it a success, from the volunteers to the generous citizens who contribute to the cause.”

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Herman remained steadfast in his commitment to spreading joy. While last year’s event saw a smaller turnout with 60 kids, Herman embraced the opportunity for more personalized interactions with each participant. As someone who has been fishing since he was a child, Herman understands the importance of fostering a love for the sport in the next generation.

Herman is known for his dedication to his work at Rio Las Palmas, where he holds a position at the Five Star Senior Living community. As preparations for this year’s event are underway, Herman and the entire community eagerly anticipate another memorable day.
