Skanska to Construct New College of Engineering at Virginia Tech

Skanska, a leading global construction and development firm, has been selected by Virginia Tech to demolish Randolph Hall and construct a new and expanded 285,500 square foot facility to house multiple College of Engineering departments. The new five-story facility, Mitchell Hall, is slated to add over 70 percent more gross square feet within the same footprint. Once completed, the new building will also be the largest building on the university’s Blacksburg campus.

“This project underscores our commitment to delivering cutting-edge academic facilities that inspire innovation and collaboration,” said Mark Balling, executive vice president responsible for Skanska’s North Carolina and Virginia building operations. “We have worked on many other projects at the university, and we are delighted to continue our partnership as we execute this transformative vision for engineering education.”

Construction of the glass, precast concrete, and Hokie Stone-clad building will also include working around the existing stability wind tunnel, one of the largest university-owned wind tunnels in the country. The tunnel will remain and will be enclosed within Mitchell Hall. Additionally, Mitchell Hall will house a 200-person arena-style lecture hall, classroom and office spaces, and flexible research lab and workspaces – all crafted to support the College of Engineering’s enrollment growth and its 21st century experiential learning and research mission.

Skanska has constructed numerous projects over the years at Virginia Tech including the Undergraduate Science Laboratory Building and the recently completed Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Addition on the Virginia Tech Carilion Health Sciences and Technology Campus.

Construction will begin in the spring of 2024 with the demolition of Randolph Hall. It has a target completion of spring 2028.

Skanska has completed over $2.9 billion worth of work in North Carolina and Virginia over the past decade. The company also has more than $640 million of ongoing projects in the two states.
