Juneau Construction Company, headquartered in Atlanta and the nation’s second-largest student-housing builder, is thrilled to announce the topping out of Hub Knoxville, set to be one of the most sought-after off-campus student housing projects near the University of Tennessee campus. This significant milestone marks the completion of the structural phase of what will be one of the largest student housing projects in the United States as well as the largest project in Juneau’s nearly 30-year history.
Hub Knoxville will feature two towering 10-story buildings and one 7-story building, providing housing for more than 1,600 students. The project will encompass 1,750 parking spaces across one precast parking deck (through a partnership with Covenant Health, the parking garage will also provide parking spaces dedicated to the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital) and nearly 23,000 SF of interior amenities, including a fitness center with a sauna, cold plunge and steam room, a study lounge and a sprawling 19,000 SF rooftop terrace complete with a basketball court, pool and hot tub. Additionally, the development will include 30,000 SF of retail space, enhancing the living and learning environment for residents.
Project Executive Greg Cornwell shared his excitement about the project’s topping-out milestone, stating, “We are very proud of our entire team and our partners on the Hub Knoxville project. We’re working every day to deliver on such a large scale. My hope for Juneau is that we are always upholding our well-established position in the student housing market. Hub Knoxville represents an exciting and historic chapter for us, and topping out on an incredible project like this is a wonderful way to mark our continued progress.”
When it began in February 2023, the construction of Hub Knoxville faced unique challenges, particularly the complex geotechnical conditions of Knoxville. Through intensive coordination and early subsurface investigations, Juneau effectively navigated these challenges and, in fact, prevented them on the project’s subsequent buildings.
The topping-out ceremony is not just a construction milestone; it’s a celebration of the efforts of all the skilled workers and trade partners involved in the project.
“It’s crucial to take this moment to appreciate everyone’s dedication. This accomplishment, especially in a city bustling with construction activity and high demand for skilled labor, is a testament to our team’s commitment,” Cornwell said.
As Juneau marks this pivotal moment, it acknowledges the significant contributions of Core Spaces and Schenk Realty Group (co-developers), the City of Knoxville, Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB), the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), Dwell Design Studio, Antunovich Associates and DCI Engineers.
“Their collaboration has been essential in advancing this project,” Cornwell said. “Hub Knoxville is tracking well to meet its scheduled completion, promising to provide exceptional living accommodations and amenities to students while contributing significantly to the local economy and community.”
