Becker’s Healthcare Names Valley View CEO Brian Murphy, MD as a Top Community Hospital CEO to Know

Valley View is pleased to announce that Brian Murphy, MD, chief executive officer of Valley View, was recognized in Becker’s Hospital Review’s 2024 edition of its “Community Hospital CEOs to Know” list. This list recognizes CEOs of community hospitals for their efforts in providing coordinated and affordable care, encompassing acute care, primary care, rehabilitation, public health services and more.

These leaders are honored for their dedication to improving community health, shaping workforce culture, planning for the future, expanding hospital services and maintaining financial stability. Becker’s Healthcare features the accomplishments of these leaders, who are critical to the successes of their respective organizations.

In 2019, Dr. Murphy was named CEO of Valley View, solidifying his commitment to high-quality, safe, patient-centered care at Valley View, and advancing its role as the leading independent health care provider in Western Colorado.

Dr. Murphy began his career in health care as a respected urologist, earning both his medical degree and completing his residency in urology at Duke University Medical Center. For 25 years Dr. Murphy cared for patients as a board-certified urologist, and for 18 years was a partner at Rocky Mountain Urology Associates. During that time, he also served as associate director of Duke’s urology residency program for two years.

“As a former investment banker in health care, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many organizations and CEOs. Over the past several years that I have been on the Valley View Board of Trustees and board chair since 2023, I’ve worked closely with Dr. Murphy. His leadership of Valley View has been consistently forthright, insightful and compassionate. We as the board of Valley View are grateful to have someone with a deep knowledge of the complexity of being a medical provider, but also the critical balance of the community’s needs with the understanding of maintaining a strong, sound financial position to ensure the hospital’s long-term independence,” says Will Douglas, Board Chair/Finance Committee Chair, Valley View Board of Directors.

Community hospital CEOs craft and execute strategic plans to improve patient care, services and hospital facilities. Along with their leadership teams, they engage with the community to understand their needs and align their hospital’s services and programs accordingly.
