The Atlantic Resiliency Innovation Institute (ARII), a nonprofit organization focused on creating a science-based community to address coastal hazards and enhance regional resiliency, continues to expand its workforce development programs aimed at training high school students in coastal hazard mitigation and STEM fields. These innovative programs are designed to equip the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed to address coastal challenges, ensuring a resilient future for South Shore communities.
Established in 2022 through the collaboration of the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce, Northeastern University, the Town of Marshfield, and Marshfield Public School District, ARII is the parent organization for the Marshfield Coastal Hazard Lab and the Marshfield Coastal Academy. Through its workforce development programs and federally funded research lab, ARII is building a science-based community to bring to market the next generation of coastal hazard mitigation solutions.
In 2024, ARII received a $1 million federal grant to support its critical research projects aimed at mitigating coastal hazards, such as erosion, flooding, and storm surges. ARII collaborates with local schools and universities to offer STEM-enhanced curricula and high-tech skill certification, empowering South Shore communities with a skilled workforce to address coastal challenges and ensure a resilient future for all.
“Our mission at ARII is to provide and inspire the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle the pressing coastal challenges we face today,” said Jeremy Devaney, co-founder and executive director of the Atlantic Resiliency Innovation Institute. “By focusing on high school training and workforce development, we are not only preparing future leaders but also ensuring the resilience and safety of our coastal communities.”
“The federal grant we received in 2024 has been instrumental in advancing our research and educational initiatives,” said Lara Brait, co-founder and director of funding & partnerships. “This investment in our youth is an investment in the future of our communities.”
