Write developed her love for writing as a young All-American Black girl who found adventure and imagination in every experience. Raised by a mother who balanced motherhood and a busy executive career, Write gained inspiration from different communities and human connections she made while living in different areas throughout the U.S. and traveling extensively nationally and internationally as her mother’s career blossomed. Throughout her time in each of these incredible communities, Write learned quickly what it was like to adapt and adjust in new environments and the bravery that’s needed in the face of change. She also learned that most people share a common goal of doing the best they can to achieve all they can and make a positive difference for their families and communities. At the same time, Write observed the richness that diverse backgrounds and culture can bring to the “all-American” story, and she quickly learned the importance of celebrating American life from diverse perspectives. Write believes that people have more in common than what separates us and, at the same time, our diversity within and across these common life experiences enriches all of us and our communities. These values can be seen throughout each Little Ruth story, as Ruth and her family and friends experience all-American life, and where authentic, diverse representation can been in the pages of each book.
“Little” Ruth Campbell is a lively and relatable protagonist whose life captures the shared human experiences of children and their families when everyday, ordinary moments become developmental milestones for children or opportunities to teach children critical life lessons, build character, instill confidence, and provide a strong foundation for children. For example, in Little Ruth: First Day of School, children, caregivers, and teachers and follow Ruth’s adventure as she starts at a new school and learns to make new friends. Like Ruth, when children go through everyday experiences, such as making new friends, ordinary experiences become extraordinary milestones in a child’s development. Likewise, this developmental milestone for one child can become is a teachable moment for another child. In the case of First Day of School, children learn about building confidence, overcoming shyness, problem-solving in times of uncertainty, and being kind all in fun, relatable ways. Children even learn new vocabulary words in each story. Through beautiful illustrations, children-friendly teachable morals, values, and tools all children will be able to apply and relate to their lives.
Write regularly has served as a keynote speaker at schools, libraries, organizations, nonprofits and conferences, across the country, sharing her passion for literacy, books and the craft of writing.
