KPFF Consulting Engineers, a leader in structural engineering design, has provided structural engineering services for the renovation/tenant fit-out of an existing ± 48,000 SF retail space into a new Target Store. The space is comprised of two below-grade levels and entrances at both grade level and the loading dock.

KPFF provided comprehensive structural engineering services by designing a new steel frame to support new hanging elevator pits and floor openings at each floor for a new passenger and freight elevator. An existing concrete beam was enlarged at the cellar 1 level to support the new framing and new loads imposed. KPFF also designed new steel framing to support a new 102’ long x 9’ wide openings for new escalators. The steel framing was also designed to support the loads imposed by the escalator. The associated escalator pits at the base of the escalators which were tied into the existing slabs, walls, and footings, were also designed by KPFF. Due to this large opening, two concrete columns had to be enlarged to meet the loading requirements since they would be unbraced for two stories.
Additional enhancements to the structure also included infill framing and slabs to infill existing escalator pits and openings since they would be no longer in use. KPFF created selective demolition drawings to indicate the extent of removals of the existing structure.
