Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Southern Maryland is expected to open in early 2023
This week, Encompass Health, the nation’s largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the future Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Southern Maryland. The 60-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital will be located at 5081 Howerton Way in Bowie and is expected to begin serving patients in early 2023.

The groundbreaking ceremony included remarks from hospital leadership and community leaders. Speakers included: Todd Turner, County Council Chair (District 4), Prince George’s County; Tim Adams, Mayor, City of Bowie; Abe Sims, MidAtlantic Regional President, Encompass Health; Trudy Hall, M.D., Vice President & Deputy Chief Medical Officer, UM Capital; and Mark Tarr, President and CEO, Encompass Health Corporation.
Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Southern Maryland will provide essential rehabilitative services that help patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions regain function and independence. Patients will receive a minimum of three hours of intensive therapy for five days each week, frequent physician visits and 24-hour nursing care.
The future inpatient rehabilitation hospital will offer physical, occupational and speech therapies to restore functional ability and quality of life. Care is provided by an interdisciplinary team of highly specialized nurses, therapists and physicians. Hospital amenities will include 60 private patient rooms, a spacious therapy gym featuring advanced rehabilitation technologies, an activities of daily living suite, therapy courtyard, dining room, in-house pharmacy and dayroom areas.
