The S.B. Steadman House Offered At $1.8 Million

Situated on 19.2 acres, the estate is currently owned by the Shaffner family, whose ancestors founded Wachovia Bank in 1893.

A Colonial Revival home built for the late Sulon B. Stedman, textile manufacturer and founder of Stedman Corporation, is offered for sale at $1.8 million. Located at 745 Lexington Road, the five-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath residence is perched on a pristine 19.2 acres. The estate is currently owned by the Shaffner family of Winston-Salem, whose ancestors founded Wachovia Bank in 1893. Marketed exclusively by William Hilliard of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty’s Charlotte office, the listing details can be viewed here.

Built in 1939 by Asheboro architect Joseph Sawyer, the home won an award from the American Institute of Architects that year. Notable features include a glass sunroom, two screened-porches and a stately veranda. The expansive acreage offers resort-style living, complete with a pool, pool house and separate guest quarters.

The Stedman family is an integral part of Asheboro history. Sulon Stedman founded his company early in the 19th century — a legacy that was furthered by his son, David, a successful businessman and local philanthropist. Instrumental in bringing the North Carolina Zoo to Asheboro, David also established Duke University’s Sarah W. Stedman Nutrition Center, named for his wife and philanthropic partner. Well-regarded as a gifted astronomer and prolific author, David continued writing books well into his 90s. He passed away in December 2000 at the age of 99.
