The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named AECOM as a 2021 Silver Engineering Excellence Award winner for their work on Boston’s Logan International Airport Terminal B Optimization Project.
The Terminal B Optimization project is a showcase for the power of design and engineering excellence. The Massachusetts’ Port Authority worked with American Airlines on the $130 million new renovation and construction project. The project included the renovation of 70,000 square feet of existing space and the construction of 75,000 square feet of new space. It consolidated security check points, American Airline gates, automated screening, upgraded baggage handling, modernized gates and created new concession options.
Travelers’ experience is defined by creative engineering, because the structural “tree” columns are so memorable, and the dynamic electrochromic glazing ensures a comfortable environment. Behind the scenes, innovative engineering allows the building to limit environmental impacts through implementation of sustainable systems. During the project’s construction, clever engineering enabled complex phasing to be executed, allowing the terminal to maintain continuous operation through the entirety of construction. From start to finish and beyond, Terminal B exemplifies project success through innovative design, collaboration and engineering excellence.
The 2021 Engineering Excellence Awards were recently announced and will be celebrated at the virtual ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala. The awards celebrate innovation, ingenuity, and excellence in engineering achievement.
“The ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence Awards Competition recognizes engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity,” said Scott A. Miller PE, President of ACEC/MA and Regional Vice President of Haley Ward. “We celebrate this year’s outstanding engineering achievements, congratulate our winners and thank them for their contributions to improving the quality of our everyday lives.”
