NBC Anchor Aisha Howard Hosts Diaper Drive Generating Thousands For Helping Mamas

11 Alive Morning News Supports Georgia’s Only Baby Supply Bank

When 11 Morning Show Anchor Aisha Howard started planning her daughter Valor’s one-year birthday, she leaned into charitable giving with an aim to help those less fortunate. Following a nationwide celebrity trend, she asked her friends and viewers to support Helping Mamas, Georgia’s only baby supply bank. In just over a month, donations of nearly 10 thousand diapers and more than five thousand period products poured into Helping Mamas’ Norcross warehouse and just as quickly as they came in, they were funneled out to partner agencies serving families in need.

“We are so thankful that Aisha and the 11Alive team took on our small but mighty cause,” said Jamie Lackey, founder and CEO of Helping Mamas. “The pandemic has fueled the need for diapers and this support benefits all the families who need help.”

With one in three families experiencing diaper insecurity, Helping Mamas works with over 150 partner agencies across Georgia to supply mothers in need of essential items. In 2021, Helping Mamas was able to serve over 50,000 individuals with over one million baby supply and period care products.

“Anyone can host a diaper drive,” said Lackey. “Whether you have the reach of the 11 Alive viewership or just a few friends, every little bit helps.”

Howard promoted the drive on her show and the station publicized it digitally as well as through public service announcements.

“Helping Mamas was amazing to work with,” said Howard. “I was thrilled to support the hard work they do in the community.

About Helping Mamas:

Helping Mamas, the sole baby supply bank in the state, was founded in 2014 by Jamie Lackey. After years of working as a social worker and in the nonprofit sector, Lackey saw a gap between the hard work she did as a social worker and the need from those she served for basic baby supplies. With one in three women in Georgia unable to afford diapers, she launched Helping Mamas to bring relief. To date, Helping Mamas has served over 55 thousand children in need and has distributed over one million essential baby supplies to families living in poverty. Helping Mamas currently works with over 150 partner agencies across the state to supply mothers in need of essential items.
