After two years of pandemic precautions, BioSciConcepts (BSC) has begun offering its popular hands-on workshops at the BioTechnical Institute of Maryland. According to Dr. Tim Fawcett, scientific director, “Our BioSciConcepts scientific workshops have been very popular nationally for research institutions And companies to invest in and increase their laboratory professionals’ skills and techniques.”
“For more than 20 years our clientsmany have found the workshops a great learning experience and an efficient way to put more ‘tools’ in the scientific toolbox,” Fawcett said. “Both our clients and we were disappointed to postpone them due to the COVID 19 pandemic. “
Biotechnical Institute of Maryland (BTI) which offers the courses put BSC on hold while making immediate adjustments to its core offering: training nontraditional entry level lab professionals for jobs in the now booming life sciences community in Baltimore.
According to Dr. Brandy Carter, BTI’s executive director, “We needed to successfully pivot from an in-person program to a hybrid model, as the demand for our graduates immediately expanded. We have done that and can now go back to offering our advanced courses to help our customers also expand while increasing the skills of their teams and retaining employees they value.”
The 2022 hands-on workshop schedule is now available at www.btiworks.org, following a successful post pandemiccell culture workshop in January, 2022. Two attendees came from across the country to learn animal cell culture to complement their areas of research.
One attendee stated, “The cell culture workshop is highly informative and well-designed. I feel confident in our ability to begin animal cell cultures and subsequent experiments in out lab. The instructor and the BTI staff could not be more knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. Thank you BTI.”
The pause during the pandemic allowed the BTI team to upgrade its cell culture incubators and biological safety cabinets by installing new equipment. “With 2 new incubators, and 6 new biological safety cabinets, our programs will benefit both, workshop attendees and our mission driven entry-level Laboratory Associates program,” Fawcett said.
