Tishman Speyer Leads Development of Hazelwood Green

Fried Frank is acting as counsel to Tishman Speyer in connection with the development of Hazelwood Green, a 178-acre site along the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, PA, that had been occupied by long-abandoned steel plants. The site was acquired in 2002 by a joint venture of three major foundations – the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the Heinz Endowments, and the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation – with the vision of transforming this strategically-located site near downtown Pittsburgh and the region’s major educational institutions into an innovation-oriented, mixed-use community.

Tishman Speyer has been selected by the foundations to be the exclusive developer of Hazelwood Green with options to purchase the site. The initial phase of the project will consist of the construction of the Robotics Innovation Center by Carnegie Mellon University and a new facility for University of Pittsburgh. Later phases will include affordable and market-rate housing, office and lab uses, and retail. The full build-out of the approximately 7-million-square-foot project is expected to occur over a 10 to 12 year period.

The Fried Frank team is led by real estate partner Tal J. Golomb and real estate associate* Alexander B. Sutherland, and included real estate associates Charles L. Roper, Heather Paik, and Michael Celler; and real estate title specialist Ellen Kresback.
