May Performance at The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center

The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center performances this May feature two acclaimed pianists, an international film, plus musical and dance presentations.

Miami International Piano Festival presents Zlata Chochieva on Sunday, May 1 at 5 p.m. Born in Moscow, she first gained international attention with her highly-praised recordings of works by Chopin and Rachmaninov. Chochieva has established herself as a distinctive voice amongst pianists, possessing a deep affinity for these composers in particular. Hailed by Gramophone as “the possessor of a comprehensive technique who brings an inner glow to every bar,” Chochieva has performed solo recitals and with orchestras in major venues throughout the world. The Miami International Piano Festival program features works by Bach, Schumann, Grieg and Brahms. Not suggested for children under 12 years of age. The Aventura International Film Series concludes with I’m Your Man on Tuesday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. From the Emmy® Award Winning director of Unorthodox Maria Schrader, I’m Your Man is Germany’s official submission to the Academy Awards® and winner of multiple awards at the Berlin International Film Festival and the German Film Awards. In the film Alma, portrayed by Maren Eggert, is a scientist coerced into participating in an extraordinary study in order to obtain research funds for her work. For three weeks, she has to live with a humanoid robot tailored to her character and needs, whose artificial intelligence is designed to be the perfect life partner for her. Dan Stevens plays Tom, a machine in human form in a class of its own, created solely to make her happy. The film is a humorous tale about the questions of love, longing and what makes a human being human. Rated R, this film is in German with English subtitles. The Aventura International Film Series presented by the City of Aventura is hosted by Shelly Isaacs who introduces the film and leads a post-screening discussion. Tickets are $12.

South Florida Legends presents Remembering Whitney on Saturday, May 7 at 2 and 8 p.m.

In a beautifully crafted tribute to one of the world’s most revered singers of all time, Whitney Houston, Latraia Savage commands the stage in a special performance. The two-hour production features breathtaking vocals, accompanied by Savage’s fabulous six-piece band and dancers, filling audiences with joy, nostalgia and wonderment in a heartfelt musical journey through Houston’s greatest hits including “I Will Always Love You,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “How Will I Know,” “One Moment in Time,” “I Have Nothing,” “Run to You,” “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “Greatest Love of All” and “I’m Every Woman.”  Tickets are $49-$59.

Florida’s premier contemporary dance troupe joins forces with New York’s Limoìn Dance Company for an inspired evening with Dance NOW! Miami on Saturday, May 14 at 8 p.m.

In celebration of the Limoìn Company’s 75th anniversary, this performance will include works by Jose Limón, one of the founders of modern dance and will feature The Waldstein Sonata danced by both companies together on one stage. Tickets are $20-$50.

The Miami International Piano Festival culminates its season with Ariel Lanyi on Sunday, May 22 at 5 p.m. in a program of works by Schumann, Albéniz and Beethoven. Born in Jerusalem in 1997, Lanyi completed his studies earlier this year, receiving a full scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has performed widely across Europe and regularly appears in concerts broadcast live on Israeli radio and television, as well as on Radio France. As soloist he has appeared with a variety of orchestras, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Brahms’s 2nd concerto, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, playing the Mozart C minor concerto. Not suggested for children under 12 years of age. Tickets are $45-$55.

Aventura Arts & Cultural Center has implemented a number of changes to ensure an enjoyable experience. Health and safety guidelines have been developed in conjunction with its management company, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic and have been informed by guidance of public health officials including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). These guidelines will be continuing to evolve as the environment changes and may be accessed on the venue’s website.
