Judge Raag Singhal, Judge Natasha DePrimo, and Judge Tabitha Blackmon were celebrated this month
For the first time in the Broward County legal community, Asian Heritage Month was marked with a celebration honoring three Asian American judges, with Kelley Kronenberg hosting the event at its corporate office.
Kelley Kronenberg’s Harsh Arora, Partner/Business Unit Leader and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair together with the leaders of South Asian Bar Association of Florida organized the event where culture, traditions, and Asian food staples and meals were shared with a large group of guests. The event was also supported and attended by the leaders of Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida.
Judge Raag Singhal is the first federal judge on the 11th Circuit bench in Broward County who is Asian American, specifically of Indian descent. Judge Natasha DePrimo is the first female Asian American judge that sat on the Broward County bench and was recently elevated to Broward County Circuit Court bench. Judge Tabitha Blackmon who sits on the Broward County bench was also invited and although was not able to attend in person, she provided a brief acknowledgement via Zoom. She is the only Asian American judge currently sitting in Broward County Court.
To celebrate the occasion on Asian Pacific and South Asian American Heritage Month, each of them spoke of their favorite Asian foods and shared why those meals continue to be important to them. They also provided some insights and explanations of their cultural significance. Judge DePrimo spoke of her passion for dumplings and her upbringing in a mixed-race household. For Judge Singhal the verdict was on shish kebobs tied to the deep heritage of Indian cuisine in his household and ras malai for dessert. Judge Blackmon shared her fond memories about spring rolls and vegetable samosas. The Asian meals mentioned by the three judges were provided for guests to experience during the event.
The celebration called for an acknowledgement of what these three judges have done for our legal profession and to celebrate their background and cultural diversity as well as all Asian Americans in the practice of law in Broward County.
