GBMC HealthCare Supports NICU with Annual Father’s Day 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk

Participants took part in the 5K or 1 mile walk at GBMC’s campus to raise funds in support of the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for the 34th year

The Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) today announced the results of its annual Father’s Day 5K and 1 Mile Fun Walk that took place last Sunday, at the GBMC campus. The event, presented by the GBMC Volunteer Auxiliary, raised money for GBMC’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a level III NICU which cares for about 400 premature and critically ill babies annually. Now in its 34th year, the run/walk exceeded expectations, resulting in $101,392 raised.

“Our NICU and its team help our tiniest patients when they need care the most,” said John B. Chessare, MD, President and CEO of GBMC HealthCare. “Many of our former NICU patients return to be part of the event, and they are the reason we do this. We thank our supporters near and far who joined us in person or virtually.”

All proceeds raised from this event go toward acquiring specialized equipment, implementing new programs, providing quality facilities, and hiring additional experienced clinical staff to continue offering a safe and comfortable space for patients and their families during these difficult times. The NICU works as a team with other disciplines at GBMC, ensuring each infant gets well-rounded care. This contributes to GBMC’s dedication to providing the highest quality care possible to each and every patient, no matter what stage of life they are in.

This year, 610 people registered for the Father’s Day 5K and 1 Mile Fun Walk. Participants had the option of registering individually or as a team for the in-person event at GBMC’s campus or as a virtual participant to run at home to support the NICU.

GBMC was recently recognized as one of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals in 2022 by Newsweek, based on medical key performance indicators and patient survey results.
