Brann & Isaacson Partner, Peter Brann, Marks More Than a Decade Teaching at Ivy League Law Schools

Brann has co-taught “The Role of the State Attorney General” at Harvard, Yale and Columbia Law Schools

Brann & Isaacson partner Peter Brann is entering his 12th year co-teaching “The Role of the State Attorney General” at a prestigious Ivy League law school.

Brann, who previously served as Maine’s Assistant Attorney General and then State Solicitor before joining the firm, is co-teaching the course at Harvard Law for the Spring 2021 semester with James Tierney, the former Maine Attorney General. In addition to teaching at Harvard, they have also taught the course at Yale and Columbia, which together comprise three of the top five law programs in the country.

“It’s been a thrill to be able to teach about state attorneys general for over 10 years to bright law students from all across the country and across the political spectrum,” Brann said. “State AGs are involved in some of the most important issues of our time, and their role extends far beyond the headlines. As I tell students, state AGs operate at the intersection of law and public policy, where you can ask not only what is the law, but what should the law be?”

As State Solicitor, Brann was responsible for all civil appeals for the State of Maine. He won the National Association of Attorneys General award for Best Brief in the U.S. Supreme Court as lead counsel in Alden v. Maine (1999),which he argued and won. At Brann & Isaacson, his practice focuses on complex corporate and intellectual property litigation, and hehas litigated patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright and corporate cases in state and federal court in 19 states and before federal agencies.

Additionally, Brann is an election law expert who successfully defended Congressman Jared Golden in a federal constitutional challenge to ranked choice voting following Golden’s2018 victory inMaine’s 2ndcongressional district. He also wrote the chapter entitled “Ranked-Choice Voting: Maine’s Experience” in the fourth edition of America Votes! (B. Griffith and J. Young, ed.) published in 2019 by the American Bar Association.
