For high school seniors approaching graduation, the last few weeks are a time of reflection—to commemorate academic achievements and appreciate the value of relationships formed with teachers, coaches, friends, and mentors.
For student employees at Oak Crest, an Erickson Senior Living community in Oak Crest, Md., it also represents a chance to be recognized for their hard work and set up for success through higher education scholarships, funded by generous donations from community residents. To be considered a Scholar Candidate, Oak Crest student employees must meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement and have worked at least 1,000 hours at the community.
This year, Oak Crest celebrated its 26th Annual Scholarship Ceremony. Members of the community’s executive team were proud to present 31 student employees with scholarships of up to $20,000 over the course of four years of higher education, based on their GPA.
“These residents make a big difference in the lives of student workers here at Oak Crest,” says Executive Director Mark Roussey. “They recognize the benefits of helping young people succeed, and they want to be a part of advancing their education and skill development.”
Since 1996, the Oak Crest Scholarship program has awarded more than $3.5 million in financial aid to 971 student employees to help advance their collegiate careers or their skills in accredited trade schools. This year’s campaign, along with planned gifts, raised a total of more than $118,000.
“These students reflect the philosophy that our mission, helping others live better lives, is achieved one interaction at a time,” says Stacey Schiano, Philanthropy Manager. “We are proud of their commitment to excellence—here, at Oak Crest, and in their studies. We are also incredibly grateful to each of our residents who contributed to the 26th Annual Scholar Campaign, without whom we would not be able to offer this opportunity to the student employees who work so hard to serve this community.”
