ICON Eyecare Leads Colorado in Game-Changing EVO ICL Surgery

Dr. Eva Kim Ranks as No. 1 EVO Visian® Implantable Collamer® Lenses (EVO ICL) surgeon in Colorado

ICON Eyecare, a Denver-based medical ophthalmology practice, is leading the Front Range in EVO Visian® Implantable Collamer® Lenses (EVO ICL) surgery Eva Kim, M.D., Front Range Medical Director for ICON Eyecare, is currently Colorado’s No. 1 EVO ICL surgeon.

ICL was introduced in 1997 to treat myopia. Since then, more than one million ICLs have been implanted worldwide. And earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval of the new EVO ICL for the correction of myopia and myopia with astigmatism.

Dr. Kim is a cataract and refractive surgeon, a comprehensive ophthalmologist, and fellowship-trained uveitis and cornea/external diseases specialist. She was one of the first surgeons in the United States to be EVO Visian ICL™ certified. ICON Eyecare is also the only provider in Colorado to use ArcScan’s Insight® 100 technology to precisely size the EVO ICL to each patient’s unique eye.

EVO ICL is essentially an implantable contact lens. It is a semi-permanent, artificial lens that is implanted into the eye, right behind the iris, to correct vision. EVO ICL is a great vision correction choice for patients with thin corneas or dry eye and who have moderate to severe nearsightedness (-2.50 to -20.0), with or without astigmatism. ICL is a lens-based refractive surgical option that introduces a lens into the eye instead of altering the shape of and thinning the cornea, as with LASIK or PRK corneal refractive surgery

“The EVO lens is a game changer for our patients with many describing the results as life-changing,” said Dr. Kim. “EVO ICL is a different type of vision correction surgery. Instead of altering the surface of the eye like LASIK, we are repairing vision in the patient’s eye by adding a lens. Unlike other vision surgeries, EVO surgery is 100% reversible. We are proud to be Colorado’s leader in EVO ICL surgery. It’s a very exciting option for our patients and continues to gain popularity across the country. And we consistently receive excellent patient feedback for this surgery because of the visual quality improvements and post-surgery comfort.”

The EVO ICL procedure is an outpatient procedure that generally takes around 15 minutes. In addition to improving patients’ vision, EVO ICL offers UV protection, works in harmony with the natural eye, is completely removable, and has been clinically proven to not cause or worsen dry eye syndrome. A pre-surgical consultation is required to determine a patient’s candidacy.

ICON Eyecare is proud to utilize ArcScan’s Insight® 100, an advanced tool used during surgical planning to confirm candidacy for EVO ICL surgery and provide extremely precise measurements of the inside of the eye. The measurements are required to help surgeons precisely determine the correct size of a patient’s lens. The technology has been in development for 20 years and is now only available in Colorado at ICON Eyecare in Denver.

In her 14 years of experience, Dr. Kim has performed over 9,000 cataract surgeries with a complication rate of less than 0.4%. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree from Stanford University, Dr. Kim went on to obtain her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. She completed her internship in internal medicine at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary before finishing her clinical fellowship in Uveitis and Cornea/External Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Kim joined Northern California Kaiser Permanente in 2006, as a comprehensive ophthalmologist, uveitis specialist and Chief of Patient Service. She was also a Lead Communications Consultant for seven years, focusing on elevating the quality of physician to physician and physician to patient communication and experience. For five years straight, based on patient feedback, Dr. Kim was ranked first out of 258 ophthalmologists in Northern California by her patients.

In 2013, Dr. Kim was elected to the Northern California Permanente Medical Group Emerging Leaders Cohort, a two-year leadership and business course led by professors from the most prestigious business schools in the United States. She also has over eight years of medical research and resident teaching experience and is a member of the AAO, ASCRS, and has co-authored many published medical chapters, papers and posters.
