Tobin, Inc. Chairman and CEO Herb Tobin can add his role in an Emmy-nominated documentary to his – and the Tobin family’s – distinguished resume. The film “Grand Lady,” which features Tobin and highlights the family’s impact in shaping the City of Hollywood, earned nominations for Best Director and Best Nostalgia Project.
“Grand Lady” aired on South Florida PBS in August 2022 and was very well-received. The film describes how the Hollywood Beach Hotel was pivotal in the city’s evolution between 1926 and 1971. In 1945, Ben Tobin – Herb’s father – moved his family from Detroit and paid over $1 million to purchase the hotel from the Navy, which had occupied it during World War II. Tobin sold the hotel in 1971 to allow the State of Florida to take over one-third of the property to construct a new bridge.
Herb Tobin was approached by Hollywood Historical Society President Clive Taylor about the film and Tobin enthusiastically agreed to participate.
“It is important to preserve history and make sure that we continue to educate people about it and keep it alive,” Tobin said. “The Hollywood Historical Society did just that. I am proud to have participated and am grateful to them for their outstanding leadership and hope that the producers win the Emmy’s.”
The Tobin family has a storied history with South Florida PBS. Ben Tobin was an early supporter through his Ben Tobin Foundation, and that continued over the years. He served on the Board of Directors for many years.
Herb Tobin also served on the Board of Directors and became Chairman for 4 years. Today, Herb is a Life Director.
