EP Engineering is proud to announce its participation in the 30th annual Canstruction design competition at Brookfield Place. Canstruction is an international charity competition where architects, engineers, contractors, and students compete to design and build structures made entirely from full cans of food. The cansculptures will be on display from November 3rd to the 14th.
On November 9th, a panel of jurors were tasked with selecting winners from the 21 creative Canstruction sculptures within the following categories: Best Original Design, Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Best Meal, and two honorable mentions.
Jurors include Eitan Bernath, City Harvest Food Council member, chef, cookbook author and principal culinary contributor to the Drew Barrymore Show; Anita Lo, City Harvest Food Council member, chef and cookbook author; Tara Cox, Managing Editor, Real Simple Magazine and John G. Duffy, Board of Directors, Adam J. Lewis Academy. Visitors are offered a chance to vote for their favorite structure, the winner of which will be awarded the People’s Choice Award. Voting will run through November 14th.
EP Engineering used 3,327 cans in this year’s structure, titled, ‘Gazing into the CANsmos’ and a total of 3,500 cans will be donated to City Harvest. This year’s structure was modeled after the James Webb Space Telescope and took four hours to complete. “At the close of the competition, all of the food from the cansculptures and food donations from the public will be donated to the City Harvest, New York’s first and largest food rescue organization, helping to feed millions of New Yorkers who struggle to put meals on their tables” explains Erin Martinez, Office & Marketing Manager, EP Engineering.
The 20 teams competing in this year’s competition include, AKF, Arup, BluEdge, CRTKL, DeSimone Consulting Engineers, EP Engineering, Gilsanz Murray Steficek LLP, HLW International LLP, HOK, KPFF Consulting Engineers, LERA Consulting Structural Engineers, Microdesk, Inc., NV5, Perkins Eastman, Severud Associates, Simpson Grumpertz&Heger, Stantec, Thornton Tomasetti, Urban Architectural Initiatives RA PC and WSP USA.A combined total of 86,908 cans from all the structures were donated to City Harvest.
