Teresa D. Teare has been named Co-Managing Partner at Baltimore-based employment and labor law firm Shawe Rosenthal LLP. Teare becomes the first woman to hold that position in the firm’s 75-year history.
Gary L. Simpler, who has been Co-Managing Partner at Shawe Rosenthal since January 1, 2014, will continue to serve in that role. Stephen D. Shawe, however, plans to step back from his work as the firm’s other Co-Managing Partner. Shawe, who has more than 40 years of experience representing employers in a number of fields, including healthcare, retail, and manufacturing, will continue his work as a Partner in the firm.

Teare comes to her new position after recently being named the 2023 Employment Law – Management “Lawyer of the Year” for the Baltimore region by Best Lawyers in America© 2023.
A partner at Shawe Rosenthal since 2012, Teare regularly represents employers and management from a broad range of industries – including non-profits, educational institutions, manufacturers, and insurance companies – in labor and employment-related litigation in federal, state and local courts, as well as before administrative agencies. She handles claims involving discrimination, harassment, wrongful discharge, wage and hour violations, including collective and class actions, and enforceability of not-to-compete covenants.
In addition to her work as a litigator, Teare regularly advises clients in virtually every facet of employment law, including implementation of policies, recruitment and selection of employees, hiring procedures, wage and hour compliance, counseling and disciplinary actions, family and medical leave act management, disability accommodations, performance evaluations and review processes, investigations resulting from allegations of harassment, and termination of the employment relationship, including mass layoffs.
Teare is an active in the Maryland State Bar Association, where she currently serves as Chair of the Labor and Employment Law Section. She is also a member of the Employment Law Alliance, a global network of employment attorneys, and the American Bar Association.
