Maryland Patient Safety Center Announces Patient Safety Innovation Awards Winners for 2023

University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center Took Home the Top Honors

The Maryland Patient Safety Center recently announced that University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center has been named the recipient of the 2023 Minogue Award for Patient Safety Innovation. The winning project was titled “Implementation of an Acute Interdisciplinary Care Model to Improve COPD (AIR- COPD) Outcomes.” The hospital was also named the winner of the Distinguished Achievement for Patient Safety Innovation Award for their program titled “Adapting ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Care During a Pandemic.”

Eight other hospitals were named Circle of Honor winners, an award recognizing other top solutions in healthcare.

This year, MPSC received over 60 submissions for this prestigious award and the winners were selected by a panel of independent judges who are leaders in the Maryland healthcare community. As in years past, the top award winners will present their projects at the 19th Annual Patient Safety Conference, Health Equity and Patient Safety: Facing the Challenge, Making the Change, on March 31, 2023. All winners, including the Circle of Honor for Patient Safety Innovation recipients, will be recognized at a special reception this evening before the conference; and all submitting teams are provided an opportunity to present their project posters at the conference.

“Selecting winners and honorees from more than five dozen successful submissions was not easy.  The healthcare organizations in Maryland continue to be leaders on a national level in their commitment to patient safety and the spirit of innovation,” said Blair M. Eig, MD President & CEO of the Maryland Patient Safety Center. “Every year we are in awe of our participants’ commitment to addressing the complex and nuanced patient safety issues facing medical providers and our healthcare system. We take great pride in honoring them for the transformative impact they continue to make on the quality of care in Maryland and beyond.”

Named for the Center’s first President and Executive Director, William Minogue, MD, FACP, to honor his enduring contributions to and passion for improving patient care and safety, The Minogue Award was created by the Center Board of Directors to recognize an organization within the state that has made a demonstrable difference in patient safety through an innovative solution.
