Notre Dame Prep Student Honored In National Juried Exhibition– Senior Is One Of Five Maryland Students Selected Nationwide

Artwork by Notre Dame Preparatory School senior Katie McKinney has been selected for the eighth annual National Art Honor Society/National Junior Art Honor Society (NAHS/NJAHS) Juried Exhibition. McKinney’s painting, “Growth and Death,” was selected among a record-breaking 2,410 submissions from schools throughout the world. Of the 127 artists highlighted, only five students hail from Maryland.

Showcasing the work of talented student artists who are members of NAHS/NJAHS programs, the exhibition will take place virtually at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) website: www.arteducators.org, from January 23 to June 30, 2023.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Katie and her artistic achievement in this competitive program,” said Sister Patricia McCarron, SSND, Ph.D., headmistress. “We are also extremely grateful to our teachers who every day help guide Katie and all of our students in their educational journeys, allowing them to cultivate their God-give talents.”

McKinney’s work was created in NDP’s AP Studio Art with WE Service class Service Learning, which integrates the school’s service requirement into the curriculum for the course. Such courses allow students to combine hands-on experiences with in-class activities to deepen both their understanding of course content and their commitment to social justice.  AP Studio Art is one of four courses NDP offers with a complementary service-learning component.

In 1978, NAEA began the National Art Honor Society program to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art. Notre Dame Preparatory School has been a member of NAHS since 2000, and at present 95 NDP students are members.

Founded in 1873, Notre Dame Preparatory School is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for approximately 800 girls in grades 6-12.  The School Sisters of Notre Dame sponsor the school, which is dedicated to educating young women to transform the world.
