Akerman LLP is proud to announce that President Joe Biden has appointed Joseph Falk, public policy advisor in the firm’s Government Affairs and Public Policy Group, to the Board of Directors of the U.S. Institute of Peace. Biden nominated Falk in August and he was confirmed by the Senate on Feb. 2.
I am deeply moved by this opportunity and look forward to contributing to the great work of the Institute of Peace, Falk said.
In addition to an incredibly accomplished career, which includes more than 20 years as the CEO of Metropolitan Mortgage Company followed by nearly as many years advising and advocating for Akerman’s mortgage industry clients, Falk has also devoted much of his life to advocating for others. His work as President and Legislative Chairman of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers, among other notable achievements, led to the passage of the S.A.F.E. Licensing Act in 2008, which set national minimum standards for home mortgage lenders. In 2014, Falk was appointed by President Barack Obama as a member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. He is a board member of the national LGBTQ Victory Fund and a former board member and past Chairman of SAVE, a Florida based LGBT advocacy organization.
I can think of no one better qualified for this position than my dear friend and colleague Joseph, said LaKeisha Marsh, chair of Akerman’s Government Affairs and Public Policy Practice Group. His humanity is an inspiration and his dedication sets the standard.
The United States Institute of Peace is a national, nonpartisan, independent institute, founded by Congress in 1984 and dedicated to the proposition that a world without violent conflict is possible, practical, and essential for U.S. and global security. In conflict zones abroad, the Institute works with local partners to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflict. To reduce future crises and the need for costly interventions, the institute works with governments and civil societies to build local capacities to manage conflict peacefully. The Institute pursues its mission by linking research, policy, training, analysis, and direct action to support those who are working to build a more peaceful, inclusive world.
Falk is a long-standing Board Member and fundraiser for the Frost Science Museum, which opened its large new, four-building campus in downtown Miami in 2017, an accomplishment of which he is particularly proud.
Falk is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and received his MBA from the Harvard Business School.
