Broward County Public Schools Surprises Winner with $1,000 Prize from Cool Tropics

In honor of National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) that took place March 6–10, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Food and Nutrition Services teamed up with Cool Tropics juice drinks for a fun design competition to promote the importance of breakfast in students’ academic success. The competition challenged students to create an original design for the oval-shaped “surfboard top” on the Cool Tropics Raspberry Passion Fruit drink pouch. More than 2,400 students from all grade levels and schools submitted entries.

On Friday, March 31, the grand prize winner was announced in a surprise visit by Cool Tropics CEO Frank Massabni to the winner’s school, Falcon Cove Middle School in Weston, FL, and presented eighth grade winner Helen Sarmiento with the $1,000 grand prize. Helen was also surprised by her parents, Elio Sarmiento Araujo and Betzaida Oliveros de Sarmiento as well as her sister Elizabet Sarmiento who were in attendance for the big reveal.

With the theme “Dig Into School Breakfast,” this year’s National School Breakfast Week encouraged all schools to recognize the importance of a healthy start to the day for fueling a child’s success in school. Broward County Public Schools offers free breakfast to all Broward County Public School students every school day. The National School Breakfast program provides 12 million nutritious breakfasts to hungry children across the U.S. every day.
