Hoar Construction announced today the groundbreaking of Icon, a 30-story, Class-A apartment tower that will soon rise in the West Campus neighborhood by the University of Texas at Austin. Hoar Construction is serving as the general contractor on the construction of the building, alongside developer The MDL Group. The tower is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025 in time for students to move in for the 2025-2026 school year.
Icon will house 555 beds across 216 apartments ranging from 1- to 5 bedroom units. The premier student living complex will feature state-of-the-art amenities, including a rooftop pool, fitness center, game and lounge rooms, a podcast studio and a number of student work spaces, all located on the top floors of the building. Additionally, there will be four levels of below-ground parking. Once completed, Icon will be one of the tallest buildings in the surrounding neighborhoods.
“Our team is proud to play an integral role in the construction of this top-of-the-line student housing community, which will support UT Austin’s fast-growing student population,” said Stephen Phelps, project superintendent at Hoar. “During the development of this project, we will be dedicated to creating a safe, accessible living environment that will inspire academic success and personal wellbeing for students. We look forward to working alongside The MDL Group and delivering a project that will continue to enhance the already vibrant, dynamic community in UT Austin’s West Campus.”
This project represents the first partnership between Hoar and The MDL Group, a New York-based developer, owner and operator of large-scale, purpose-built student housing properties. Additional project partners include Rhode Partners as the architect, DCI Engineers as the structural engineer, and Blum Engineering as the MEP Engineer.
According to Berkadia’s 2023 Student Housing Market report, UT Austin has the highest bed count in the nation for student housing projects currently under construction, nearly double the tally of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, which is ranked second on the 50-school list.
Hoar’s Austin division continues to be an active player across the market with recent projects including an 18-story student housing tower, Inspire on 22nd, also located on West Campus, and The Loren at Lady Bird Lake. The firm also has a division in Houston and announced in early 2022 an expansion into North Texas with the addition of an office in McKinney, Texas.
