Energy efficient new building represents one of the first mass timber charter schools built in the region
Consigli Construction Co., Inc. today joined Evergreen Charter School, NorthStar Museums and Education and Martin Hopp Architects to celebrate the groundbreaking of Evergreen Charter School in Hempstead, New York. The new school will serve as one of the first mass timber charter schools built on the east coast and will also feature components designed to promote energy efficiency and sustainability. Once completed, the 85,000 sq. ft. building will also include a rooftop garden where students can grow and harvest their own produce.
“We are humbled to be part of an initiative like this. The impact this project will have not only in the community of Hempstead but in our society is inspiring,” said Doug Renna, Executive Vice President – Pre-Construction at Consigli. “It’s exciting to be a part of building a space that fosters a learning environment for future leaders.”
“As one of the first mass timber charter schools on the East Coast, this project is a milestone for Evergreen, the Hempstead community, and our studio. It heralds a green new future for sustainable building and charter school design. This groundbreaking is testament to what’s possible when we come together and accept nothing less than the best for the education of our youth and a sustainable future,” said Martin Hopp, Architect, Martin Hopp Architects.
“NorthStar is thrilled for this monumental moment! We have been alongside ECS’ leadership, staff and students dreaming for this point in time since 2020 and it is a beautiful feeling to see it come to fruition,” said Rosella Harvey, President, Northstar Owners Rep.
Ultimately serving grades 7-12 in 30 classrooms, this educational project will feature shared spaces in the form of labs (such as science and art/innovation), a library, music/orchestra rooms and breakout rooms. Students will also benefit from a multi-purpose cafe, kitchen and gymnasium.
The new school is targeting LEED Gold certification and will include a green roof with outdoor gardening space and a glulam mass timber rooftop cafeteria with natural light and views through glazed storefront walls. The structural steel frame with CLT Engineered plank deck construction is incorporated into the building and includes mass timber components for the exterior sunshades and fins to utilize low-carbon materials and design to maximize sustainability. The HVAC systems will be energy efficient and consider long-term sustainability.
The Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service selected The Evergreen Charter School as one of the few winners of the 2022 Mass Timber Competition: Building to Net Zero, which showcases mass timber’s innovative applications in architectural design, and highlights its significant role in reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment.
