Hoar Announces Groundbreaking of Five-Level Parking Deck at Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine

The 328,000-square-foot garage will be located within the Grand Central Park community and support the school’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Conroe, Texas

Hoar Construction announced today the groundbreaking of a 328,000-square foot parking garage for Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Conroe, Texas. Hoar is serving as the general contractor on the project, which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2024.

The five-level garage will feature 983 spaces, several EV charging stations and a guided parking system for guest convenience. With the upcoming expansion of the College of Health Sciences at the school’s Conroe campus, the garage will provide parking for students and faculty ahead of the opening of the new Health Professions Building that will break ground in 2024.

“We are honored to work alongside Sam Houston State University in bringing this modern and thoughtfully designed parking facility to its medical school community,” said Lance Smith, senior project manager at Hoar. “Hoar’s deep well of experience in planning and executing high-quality projects on school campuses around the state will serve us well as our team embarks on this new partnership. We look forward to building our relationship with Sam Houston State and upholding our longstanding history of higher-education construction success throughout Texas.”

Hoar was hired to oversee the design, fabrication and buildout of the garage and began the design planning phase in October of 2022. The firm has worked closely with school officials to meet expectations on budget, scheduling and turnover date. The project sits on an old riverbed on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River, requiring the team to install Geopier Rammed Aggregate Piers 10-12 feet down to stabilize the structure in sandy terrain. During peak construction, as many as 140 workers will be onsite to assist with delivering the project.

The parking garage sits in the master-planned community of Grand Central Park along I-45 and Loop 336, providing visibility for thousands of motorists who traverse through the area every day. The exterior of the structure is comprised of vertical-colored panels that abstract DNA sequencing which is in theme with the existing campus. A light box with Sam Houston State University’s logo will act as a beacon at the corner of the parking garage noting the campus’ location from the freeway. A health science inspired mural at an open stair will span the five floors of the parking garage engaging the internal corner of the campus. “This new parking structure will not only suffice the needs of the growing campus, but also emphasize Sam Houston’s commitment to the health profession” said Michelle Old, Associate Vice President at Kirksey Architecture.

Additional project partners include Kirksey Architecture as the designer, Walter P Moore as the parking consultant, Dally + Associates as the structural and civil engineer, Teliosity as the MEP engineer and technology consultant, Kirksey Architecture for Branding/Graphics, and Asakura Robinson as landscape architect.

Hoar has completed a number of high-grade parking garage projects across the country in recent years, including a four-level, parking garage with 1,300 spaces at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport and a 239,172 square-foot, four-level parking garage at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with 620 spaces.
