Urban Land Institute Announces Two Strategic Board Leadership Positions

Tyrone Rachal will serve as the new Chair of ULI Atlanta; Amanda Rhein named as the Chair for Mission Advancement

Urban Land Institute (ULI) leaders Tyrone Rachal, president of Urban Key Capital Partners, and Amanda Rhein, executive director of the Atlanta Land Trust, have been selected for leadership roles within ULI Atlanta. Rachal will serve as the new Chair of ULI Atlanta. Rhein will serve as the District Council’s Chair for Mission Advancement. These roles are vital for delivering the Institute’s mission at the local level, where it has 1,400 members across the entire state of Georgia and eastern Tennessee.

ULI is a global, multidisciplinary real estate organization with more than 48,000 members dedicated to shaping the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide. ULI Atlanta is part of ULI’s network of 52 District Councils in the Americas region.

As Chair, Rachal is working closely with the current chair, Marc Pollack, Co-Founder and Chairman of RangeWater Real Estate and founder of The Atlanta Affordable Housing Fund, to facilitate a smooth transition before assuming office July 1, 2023. The Chair will work closely with the council’s Advisory Board and ULI Atlanta Executive Director  to determine priorities and set out a member driven program for his two-year term. ULI Atlanta is an impact oriented council hosting over 50 convenings on an annual basis to support its members. The district council has a strong emphasis on leadership initiatives such as Center for Leadership which is entering its 15th year of execution and the Etkin Scholars program; offers three local product councils; and foundational programming like Technical Assistance Panels (TAPs), Women’s Leadership Initiative, Young Leaders Group, and UrbanPlan.

Rachal has been actively involved in ULI and has an extensive track record of volunteerism at the Institute on a local and national level. He is a current ULI Global Governing Trustee, past Chair of a national product council the Public Private Partnership Council (PPPC) – Gold Flight, he sits on the Global Advisory Board for the ULI Curtis Infrastructure Initiative, is active with the Advisory Services Panel program, and the current PPPC-Gold Foundation Ambassador, among lending his talents to various other committees across the organization. Rachal most recently served as the ULI Atlanta Vice Chair of the Advisory Board, as well as being a member of its Livable Communities Council. He also is a 2010 graduate of the ULI Atlanta Center for Leadership (its first class) and has been awarded the Robert M. O’Donnell award and the Rising Star Award at the global level.

“I have held many roles across the Urban Land Institute, but I am truly looking forward to this opportunity to lead our local chapter as ULI Atlanta Chair and continue working closely with the Advisory Board and the ULI Atlanta team in executing ULI’s mission,” Rachel said. “Every new Chair faces an interesting set of challenges, and I am no different. As one of the most sought-after regions in the country, Atlanta sits at an inflection point.  We are in an integral moment in Atlanta’s history, where affordable housing, diversity and livability are on the forefront of our communities’ minds. Together with Daphne and the ULI Atlanta staff, we will continue advancing our vision of working together to face these issues and using the convening power of ULI in offering our local communities solutions to these challenges.

As Chair of Mission Advancement (CMA), Rhein will serve in a vice chair role for the Atlanta District Council’s Advisory Board. The CMA role is key as it acts as a bridge between ULI members and the Atlanta District Council in advancing ULI’s mission. She will help ensure that ULI practices, policies and programs are integrated locally and will work closely with Rachal and other ULI senior leaders. Rhein has a proven background of leadership within ULI and in her career. Before her current role with the Atlanta Land Trust, she served as the Senior Director of TOD and Real Estate with MARTA and spent 10 years with Invest Atlanta attracting investment to Atlanta’s most underserved communities.

After joining ULI in 2002 while still a student at Georgia Institute of Technology, Rhein has been increasingly involved. She has served on various committees including the Young Leaders Group, Membership, UrbanPlan, Governance and TAP. She has also chaired the Awards of Excellence, and notably, Rhein helped establish the Center for Leadership program in 2010 and served as its initial co-chair. CFL is entering its 15th year of execution and is now a national model for other district councils across the country. Currently, Rhein is the co-chair of the DEI Committee  and has served on the ULI Atlanta Advisory Board since 2007. She was previously Chair of the ULI Livable Communities Council, was part of the 2020 Leaders Cohort through WLI and as a WLI Prologis Scholar in 2022.

“I believe in ULI’s mission and have worked to shape the future of the built environment my entire career,” said Rhein. “In this role, I’ll continue to pursue a focus on ULI’s  mission priorities of delivering housing attainability solutions to local communities, unpacking what role the real estate sector plays in decarbonizing the built environment, and pursuing pathways to diversity within the commercial real estate sector. . Under ULI’s guidance and best practices, we can make a true impact on the local level, and that’s where all change begins.”

“One of the first major events happening under Tyrone and Amanda’s watch will be our 27th Awards for Excellence Program on September 14, 2023. ULI’s mission priorities will shine through the projects we plan to recognize and Amanda has been a huge part of ensuring that alignment.” said ULI Atlanta Executive Director, Daphne Bond-Godfrey.

“ULI Atlanta is one of the strongest and most active district councils in the country.” This is largely thanks to our members, which the District Council Chair and the Chair for Mission Advancement have the privilege of working so closely with. Both of these roles are incredibly vital positions, not just to Atlanta and our region, but also to ULI as a whole. Under the leadership of Tyrone and Amanda, our communities will see the lasting difference made by the district council. I look forward to working with them..”
