Holy Cross Medical Staff Donates $10,000 To Help Colleagues

Recent torrential rains and historic flooding in South Florida left many residents in need. Holy Cross team members were among those that sustained damage to their homes and property.

In the spirit of the Holy Cross mission to serve as a compassionate and transforming healing presence, the medical staff came together to donate $10,000 to the Sister Catherine McAuley Fund, which provides direct and sufficient assistance to Holy Cross Health’s colleagues and their families for food, utilities and housing in times of need. It is a lifeline to those who find themselves in difficult financial situations due to unforeseen circumstances, providing them with a sense of security and enabling them to consistently come to work to serve patients.

“I give a heartfelt thank you to our medical staff for their generous donations,” said Jose Lopez, MD, Holy Cross Health Chief Medical Officer. “Their compassion and support mean so much to those facing hardships.”

The fund was established in 1996 by the Sisters of Mercy in honor of Sister Catherine McAuley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland in 1831. She and her Sisters created 14 foundations in Ireland and England to serve the poor, sick and uneducated. Upon her passing 10 years later, the movement came across the pond to the United States, where the Sisters of Mercy founded hospitals, schools, orphanages and homes for women and girls who were at risk. More than a century later, Sister Catherine McAuley’s legacy lives on, making the local community stronger one donation at a time.
