The South Shore Food Bank, working in partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank to improve food access on the South Shore, help address food equity across towns, and help make fresh options more readily available to families relaying on food pantries to meet their needs, was recently named a Hunger Relief Champion by the Greater Boston Food Bank.
Named Community Partner of the Year, the Greater Boston Food Bank’s Partner Appreciation Awards honor the most dedicated hunger-relief volunteers, donors, agencies and advocates. The award was bestowed late this spring.
The Weymouth Food Pantry and South Shore Food Bank were recognized for their efforts in serving the city of Weymouth with a pop-up pantry model that brings healthy food into Weymouth neighborhoods of the utmost need, meeting clients where they are at. Through the South Shore Food Bank, they also serve 11 other South Shore food pantry partners by operating as a shared deliver site, saving these agencies on transportation costs and providing additional food resources to other communities south of Boston. They received one of 12 awards given to valued partner agencies, public officials, volunteers, donors, and other organizations that have made considerable contributions to GBFB’s mission to end hunger over the past year.
The South Shore Food Bank was also recognized for its efforts launching their South Shore Food Bank Leadership Program in 2022, which convened a cohort of food security agencies interested in improving their operations by participating in trainings on grant writing, fundraising, volunteer management, social media, and more.
“We are thrilled to receive this recognition from the Greater Boston Food Bank,” said Pamela Denholm, executive director of the Weymouth Food Pantry and South Shore Food Bank. “When I first joined the Weymouth Food Pantry five years ago, one of the first things I did was attend this awards ceremony, and I immediately set a goal for myself and our organization that we work to make an impact similar to what other award winners were recognized for. I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together as a community – and look forward to continuing to make strides to improve food access and equity and enhance healthy communities.”
