Goodell DeVries Adds John Grimm and David Shea to Commercial Practice

Goodell DeVries is pleased to welcome partner John R. Grimm and associate David Shea to the firm’s Commercial and Business Tort Litigation practice. John also joins the firm’s Appellate Practice Group.

John was most recently a partner at a prominent Washington, D.C., litigation and telecom boutique. He is an experienced trial and appellate litigator who represents organizations from a range of industries in commercial disputes, administrative proceedings, and related appeals. He has also represented individuals in civil rights suits and criminal appeals. John previously served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Maryland Attorney General’s Office Civil Litigation Division.

An active leader in Maryland’s legal community, John serves on the section council of the Maryland State Bar Association’s administrative law and litigation sections; is the chair of the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys’ Association’s Appellate Committee; and is a founding member of the Cole-Davidson Appellate Inn of Court. He has served as an adjunct professor of evidence at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.

John is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., cum laude, 2011), where he was Editor-in-Chief of the American Criminal Law Review’s Annual Survey of White Collar Crime, and the University of Maryland, College Park (M.A., 2008 and B.A., cum laude, 2006).

David represents clients in various commercial matters, including contractual disputes, employment law issues, and business tort litigation. Before joining Goodell DeVries, he was an Assistant State’s Attorney at the Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City and an associate at two Washington, D.C.-based law firms. He was also a Term Law Clerk at the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and a Legal Intern at the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Baltimore.

David graduated from Harvard Law School (J.D., 2020). While there, he was Executive Editor of Online Content and Article Selection Board Member of Harvard’s Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Journal. He also represented and mentored other students representing Massachusetts prisoners as part of Harvard’s Prison Legal Assistance Project. David also holds degrees from the University of Southern California (Master of Urban Planning, 2013), and Princeton University (A.B., cum laude, 2011).

“With the addition of these two attorneys, our commercial practice group is flourishing in experience and bandwidth,” says Managing Partner Nichole Nesbitt. “We are excited to grow at the partner level and associate level simultaneously with top-notch talent.”
