Lorien Health Services raised nearly $50,000 and was named ‘top donor’ for the American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Baltimore.
The family-owned assisted living and nursing home company and industry innovator registered 219 employees who participated in the walk which took place October 21st, 2023, at the Camden Yards Sports Complex in Baltimore. Lorien nurses, administrators, executives, and staff took part in the three and five-mile non-competitive walks.
“Everyone at Lorien was excited to participate in the American Cancer Society’s walk,” said Lou Grimmel, CEO of Lorien Health Services. “Raising money and awareness to fund breast cancer research is critically important. Women make up 85 percent of our workforce and some of them or their family members have battled breast cancer. We want everyone in our Lorien family to know that we care about them and are committed to fighting this disease.”
Debby Sadler-Lynch, Corporate Human Resources and Benefits Manager at Lorien, spoke to hundreds of people attending the walk.
“I know firsthand what all of your support means,” said Sadler-Lynch, who is a breast cancer survivor. “It has been three years now, but some memories never fade. While the rest of the world was battling Covid I was battling breast cancer. I had no symptoms no family history just a mammogram that stopped me in my tracks.”
Sadler-Lynch praised Lorien for its Platinum sponsorship and support. Senior executives, including Grimmel, showed their support by logging miles with colleagues.
“They [Lorien] walk the walk,” Sadler-Lynch said.
Sadler-Lynch also recognized Johnna Brandt, Administrator of Lorien Bel Air, for raising $20,000 of the total amount.
One out of every eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer throughout their lifetime, according to national statistics. Although the risk of dying from cancer in the US has continually decreased over the past 29 years, the incidence of breast cancer is rising, according to the American Cancer Society’s 2023 Cancer Facts & Figures.
The organization estimates that 298,000 women – including 6,760 in the state of Maryland – will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Breast cancer alone accounts for 31% of female cancers.
Over the past three decades, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign has united communities, companies, and individuals and has grown into the nation’s largest and most impactful breast cancer movement. Its noncompetitive walks provide a supportive community for courageous breast cancer survivors and people living with metastatic breast cancer, caregivers, and families alike.
