On Veterans Day, we honor Marshall Clinkscales, whose dedication to our country during his service in the United States Air Force (USAF) is matched only by his remarkable success in real estate. Marshall’s journey from 1966 to 1972 is a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence, both in the military and as a civilian.
The Journey
Marshall’s military journey began after he graduated from Abilene Christian College in 1965. He joined the United States Air Force as a pilot, a role that required one year of rigorous training and a subsequent commitment of five years. His dedication during the 12-month pilot training program mirrored the discipline and perseverance that would later define his career in commercial real estate.
The Vietnam War was ongoing during Marshall’s service, and the strategy at the time was “Search and Destroy.” The objective was to locate and engage the enemy, inflict maximum casualties, and return to base. Marshall vividly recalls his experiences in the A Shau Valley, a crucial area bordering South Vietnam and Laos. The valley was taken and obliterated three times in a relentless cycle. In hindsight, Marshall believes a “Take and Hold” strategy might have been more effective. These memories underscore the complexities of the conflict.
Reflections of a Vetaran…..
Reflecting on the Vietnam War, Marshall says that he was not drafted but he enlisted. He decided that he’d like a choice in what he did. Once enlisted, they did not ask his thoughts or feelings on the war. Instead, they asked, “Will you serve”? The resounding answer for Marshall was, “YES.”
It was a brutal war. At one point he was told if he found himself in the jungle alone he should bury himself deep in the foliage and stay put. His commander reminded them that everyone and everything knew that jungle better than they would. “Stay put, hide and we’ll come find you,” a heavy sentiment for a young man in his twenties.
Marshall also remembers the profound loss of comrades. Their sacrifice and dedication to their country left an indelible mark on Marshall’s heart.
Bonds and Connection…
However, Marshall’s military story isn’t just about the challenges of war; it’s about the people he met and the bonds formed through shared experiences. He vividly recalls the names and faces of those he served alongside, underscoring the enduring power of camaraderie and friendship. Marshall expresses a heartfelt desire to reconnect with old friends, swap war stories and reminisce about the past.
On this Veterans Day, Marshall Clinkscales represents a veteran who not only served honorably but also achieved remarkable success in civilian life. His journey serves as a reminder that veterans carry with them not only the duties they performed but also the experiences and connections forged during their service. Marshall’s story reflects the enduring spirit of veterans contributing to society long after their military service has concluded.
