Back Home Hospitality to Open New Concept in Base of Visa’s HQ Tower
Mission Rock Partners, a collaboration between the San Francisco Giants, Tishman Speyer and the Port of San Francisco, today announced an agreement with Back Home Hospitality, the restaurant group behind the award-winning Che Fico, to create and operate a new full-service restaurant in Mission Rock.
The new concept will occupy 8,300 square feet at the northwest corner of Visa’s new global and North American headquarters building. The street level restaurant will feature a main dining room, a full bar and private dining rooms when it opens in early 2025.
Back Home Hospitality, founded by Matt Brewer and Chef David Nayfeld, who recently received a semifinalist nomination as one of the nation’s most outstanding chefs by the prestigious James Beard Foundation, is known for two of San Francisco’s most popular eateries – Che Fico and Che Fico Alimentari, and recently opened their third concept, Che Fico Parco Menlo this past fall in Menlo Park.
The Che Fico team joins a growing lineup of restaurants and shops coming to the new 28-acre neighborhood as part of Phase One of the mixed-use development. Mission Rock Partners previously announced that Quik Dog, Arsicault Bakery, Ike’s Love & Sandwiches, LuxFit and Proper Food will all begin to open this year. In total, this initial slate of retailers will occupy over 20,000 square feet at the base of Mission Rock’s first four buildings.
“Our team is thrilled to partner with the San Francisco Giants, Tishman Speyer and Visa in bringing what we hope will become one of the most iconic restaurant spaces in San Francisco. We are bullish on the future of San Francisco and excited to be a part of the community. We look forward to bringing the city an incredible restaurant,” said David Nayfeld of Back Home Hospitality.
“We are pleased to welcome Chef David Nayfeld and Matt Brewer to the Mission Rock family,” said Tishman Speyer Managing Director Maggie Kadin. “Their new flagship restaurant will be a world-class amenity for Mission Rock’s residents and workers, as well as a vibrant waterfront destination for visitors from San Francisco and beyond.”
“We’re incredibly fortunate to partner with Back Home Hospitality to expand their portfolio to San Francisco’s newest neighborhood,” said San Francisco Giants President and CEO Larry Baer. “We know this new establishment will flourish at Mission Rock given the proven success of David and Matt’s existing locations and unique approach to hospitality.”
Mission Rock represents over 15 years of city planning and community input to transform a surface parking lot across from Oracle Park into an exciting new neighborhood featuring stylish rental homes, inspired parks and open spaces, community-serving retail, innovative workspaces and parking to serve ballpark patrons and the surrounding area.
Designed by Henning Larsen architects out of Copenhagen, the 13-story Visa Building is inspired by the geologic rock formations in Yosemite National Park. The design features an iconic faceted façade, accented by lush green terraces which ascend the podium and visually extend the experience of the five-acre China Basin Park, which is currently under construction.
The Canyon, the first building to open at Mission Rock, welcomed its first residents in June. The 23-story tower includes 283 rental apartments, 102 of which are available at below market rates. Building F, a second residential tower that will add 254 apartments to the neighborhood, topped out in June. Work is also progressing on a commercial building that has been designed to accommodate life sciences research and development.
The retail leasing program continues to be spearheaded by the CBRE team of Alex Sagues and Laura Barr, which represented Mission Rock Partners in the agreement.

About Back Home Hospitality
Back Home Hospitality (BHH) was founded in 2015 by partners David Nayfeld and Matt Brewer, who returned to their home in the Bay Area after years of working for some of the highest regarded restaurant groups in New York City and Chicago. Matt and David both live in the Bay Area and are raising their children here. Their first project, Che Fico, opened to mass critical and popular appeal in 2018 and remains one of the country’s best known Italian restaurants. In 2019, the pair opened Che Fico Alimentari. During the pandemic, the Che Fico team pivoted to a charitable model which provided tens of thousands of meals to people in need.
The group also developed a line of signature sauces and condiments that are now being sold across the country. In 2021, the group promoted two longstanding team members, Culinary Director Evan Allumbaugh and Director of Service Operations Bryn Barone, to partners. That same year, BHH brought on nationally recognized wine professional Jason Alexander as Wine Director and Partner.
