In a great example of how the public and private sectors can intersect to provide the gift of art to communities, a dynamic rotating public art installation is on view at The Landing at Brooklyn Bridge Park, The Dermot Company’s waterfront 140-unit mixed-income residential property located in Brooklyn Heights. Dermot – in collaboration with DECORAZONgallery and High Priestess Project – has coordinated a year-long exhibit of rotating works, spotlighting a diverse collection of New York City-based artists.
The inaugural installment – Guilt for Dreaming by Liam Alexander – can now be viewed in the property’s striking 10-foot windows facing Furman Street and wrapping around the building. “This is a great example of how real estate developers can rethink the value of their frontages, lobbies, and publicly viewable spaces, being not just for their residents’ enjoyment but for the entire neighborhood’s benefit,” says MK Semos, co-owner of DECORAZONgallery. Pamela Jean Tinnen, founder of High Priestess Project, adds “We are thrilled to be reunited on such an auspicious public art project and can’t wait to share Guilt for Dreaming with the community. This exhibition marks the first of many exciting installations at The Landing!” Alexander’s exhibit will be on display through June 2024.
These “for the public” art installations are part of Dermot’s larger community engagement initiatives and support of the arts. Dermot has installed artwork from local artists throughout its portfolio. Dermot has also regularly been involved in community-focused efforts, from their partnership with the City Parks Foundation and Boys and Girls Club of Harlem (where Dermot residents, employees, and stakeholders sponsor holiday wish lists of local NYC children) to the Trevor Project and the Bard Prison Initiative.
“This initiative fits beautifully within our company’s goal of giving back to the community, in this case, giving the gift of art,” says Charlie C. Albor, VP Property Operations at Dermot. We were able to take space that was being used for advertising the sale of nearby condominiums and turn it into public gallery space for our residents, neighbors, and others to enjoy. Artists like Liam are indispensable to the fabric of our neighborhoods and New York City culture.”
A Brooklyn-based contemporary artist, Alexander – who has previously collaborated with prominent brands like Wix.com, The City of New York, Samsung, SAP, and Renaissance Hotels – specializes in crafting poignant photographic-based collage art, utilizing and drawing inspiration from his own photographs and videos. Alexander’s Guilt for Dreaming fuses ancient tarot, exotic botanicals, and antique patterns to craft dynamic portraits. “These works are an homage to the purgatory of our own collective unconscious, each one a world unto itself,” Alexander remarks.
Liam Alexander’s installation is the first of many public exhibits to come at the Landing, as Dermot, DECORAZONgallery, and the High Priestess Project plan to rotate artists on a quarterly basis. The upcoming exhibits will proudly feature the works of talented individuals coming from marginalized communities, including but not limited to LGBTQIA+, black, indigenous, Hispanic, AAPI, and those with disabilities. Beginning this summer, captivating work by Sarah Gerard and Sara Rahanjam will replace Alexander’s work and enjoy a temporary home at The Landing.
