Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), a top-ranked public university with undergraduate degree programs focusing on science, engineering, technology, math, and business that blend academics and experiential learning, is proud to announce that two student teams from the International Maritime Business Department clinched first and third place in the 2024 Supply Chain Online Competition hosted by the UMASS – Boston College of Management.

The two Academy teams were among 15 participating teams from nine universities that included formidable competitors including Babson College, Bentley University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Taking home first place were team members Nicholas Lamattina (Groveland), Evan Presswood (South Dennis), and Richard Pagliuca (Saugus). Third place honors went to team members Ryan Mackintire (Raynham), Thomas LaCourt (Weymouth), and Christian Winkler (Longmeadow). The teams were guided by Professor Paul Szwed of the International Maritime Business Department.

The annual five-hour competition challenges students to test their abilities in a virtual business simulation by applying learning tools, theoretical knowledge, and classical training.

“Our IMB students showcased their prowess in maximizing organizational profit while managing the complexities of the supply chain,” said Prof. Szwed, noting that the student teams had to manage ordering, inventory, transportation, and capacity in the face of seasonal demand over two-years of simulation.

“Congratulations to all of the IMB student participants in this prestigious intercollegiate competition,” said Dr. Bani Ghosh, professor and IMB department chair at the Academy. “And special thanks to Prof. Szwed for his guidance to and support of our student teams.”

“The entire Academy community is proud of the skill, dedication, and exceptional performance of our IBM teams,” said Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, USMS, president of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. “These victories not only underscore the Academy’s commitment to excellence, but also signal our position as a leader in business education.”
