A ceremonial groundbreaking event marked the official start of construction for South Lake Marketplace, a major new development in Bowie, Maryland. The project, valued at $1.3 billion, is set to become one of the largest mixed-use developments in the Baltimore-Washington region.
The event, hosted by NAI Michael Companies, drew over 150 attendees including local officials, business leaders, and community members. Ken and Gary Michael of NAI Michael Companies expressed their excitement as their team’s vision for South Lake becomes a reality.
South Lake Marketplace will feature a 600,000-square-foot regional retail hub anchored by Giant Food. The larger South Lake development will include 1,600 new residences ranging from luxury apartments to single-family homes.

Speakers at the event included Tom Graham from Liberty Sports Park, Ira Kress, president of Giant Food, and Lance London of Ma Pearl’s Restaurant. Prince George’s County Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Angie Rodgers also shared remarks on the benefits the development will bring to the region.
Several prospective tenants were on hand to showcase their businesses and offer samples, including Ma Pearl’s Restaurant, Tropical Smoothie Café, Ledo Pizza, Dat Jerk Caribbean Chargrill, 4th Quarter Sports Bar, Gelat’Oh, Pack ‘N Business Solutions, and Aja Blu Salon & Spa.
