As a leader of the Sexual Abuse Division of JJS, Serbin has been recognized throughout his career for his work as an advocate for those abused by Catholic clergy. He is widely recognized for helping to bring to light the Church’s knowledge of these atrocities.
Since 1987, Serbin has represented victims of sexual abuse, most often focused on clergy child molestation cases. He has represented child abuse survivors in claims against every diocese in Pennsylvania, as well as tried and won the first case in Pennsylvania against a diocese, bishop, and child predator. As a result, Hutchison v Luddy and the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, et al., created a new law in the field of sexual abuse. It gave sexual assault survivors the right to bring a claim against the church for negligent retention and supervision of a pedophile priest, along with the right to recover punitive damages for the acts of covering up and moving known child predators to various other parishes.
Serbin has successfully argued major cases in the Pennsylvania Superior and Supreme courts, which helped establish legal precedent in various areas of the law. Serbin is a graduate of The University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University School of Law.
