Broward County Public Schools Celebrates National School Lunch Week October 14–18, 2024

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is celebrating National School Lunch Week (NSLW) from Oct. 14–18, 2024, in recognition of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), which serves nearly 30 million children across the country each day. The 2024 theme, “School Lunch Pirates: Find Your Treasure,” highlights the importance of a healthy school lunch to a student’s success in and out of the classroom. The week will feature fun-filled student activities and Districtwide events promoting healthy eating while highlighting why students love school lunches.

BCPS NSLW includes the following events.

  • An official proclamation by the Broward County School Board, declaring Oct. 14–18, 2024, as NSLW.
  • A poster contest for BCPS students in all grade levels. The artwork must be completed by October 14 and should reflect what the NSLW theme means to them.
    • An award ceremony will be held to name and award prizes to the contest winners for each grade level.
    • Contest winners will have their artwork displayed in the School Board Room of the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center. They will also receive a rosette ribbon and attend a special reception. The Grand Prize winner will receive an iPad.

“We are thrilled to celebrate National School Lunch Week and highlight the work our Food & Nutrition Services professionals do to ensure all students have healthy and nutritious meals to fuel academic success,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “As part of this weeklong celebration, I’m looking forward to hosting our annual poster contest to showcase students’ artistic talents while recognizing the importance of proper nutrition.”

The federally funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has been fueling students for success for 77 years, providing nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards.

The BCPS Food & Nutrition Services Department offers breakfast and lunch to all students at no cost for the 2024/25 school year thanks to funding provided by the Food and Nutrition Services Department through the Community Eligibility Provision, Universal Free Breakfast Program and Universal Free Lunch Program Pilot Year 2.

Lunch options are now healthier than ever, including more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, and less fat and sodium. Cafeterias have also expanded their vegan and vegetarian options.
