With Open Positions at 94% of Firms, the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Calls for Workforce Investment to Address Labor Shortages
As the U.S. construction industry faces a labor shortage, Caddell Construction is intensifying efforts to attract, train and retain skilled workers.
The customer-focused general contractor, known for constructing what matters to ensure the long-term success of its employees, clients and strategic partners, is celebrating Careers in Construction Month by highlighting the rewarding opportunities available in an industry that forms the backbone of America.
Careers in Construction Month (CICM) is an annual initiative that raises public awareness about the construction industry’s wide range of career paths. It aims to inspire the next generation and showcase the positive impact a fulfilling career in construction can have on individuals and their communities.
According to the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), 94% of construction firms nationwide — including Caddell — are actively seeking to fill open positions. As of mid-2024, nearly one in three contractors reported at least 11 unfilled positions. This shortage is not just a statistic; it’s a pressing issue threatening the industry’s ability to meet demand.
“Caddell’s No. 1 strategic goal is to attract, develop and retain key talent. Our people are our most valuable asset. We focus on retention through internal career pathways, clearly defining expectations and opportunities for advancement, and consistently investing in the growth of our people,” said Caddell Construction President and CEO Mac Caddell. “Careers in Construction Month is a prime opportunity to showcase the stable and rewarding career paths available in our industry. At Caddell, we always construct what matters, including building up our employees.”
In response to the national labor shortage, Caddell has taken several proactive steps, including a comprehensive review of compensation across the board, and stronger consideration of nontraditional candidates like professionals who are seeking a career change. Recent examples of Caddell’s new hires include veterans who are transitioning out of full-time military service, law enforcement professionals, and project managers from other industries.
The company has also implemented digital recruitment strategies aimed at younger generations and engaged with high schools and technical training programs to strengthen the workforce pipeline.
One recent initiative is designed for individuals aged 16 to 20, offering hands-on experience and valuable insight into construction careers.
Caddell has also ramped up internal training programs to ensure all employees have the skills needed to advance, holding monthly supervisor training sessions and frequent development workshops focused on hard and soft skills.
“With construction playing such a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the nation’s infrastructure, addressing the labor shortage is more critical than ever,” said Caddell. “As we continue to tackle workforce challenges, long-term solutions like investing in people, creating pathways for growth, and showing the next generation that construction is not just a job — it’s a meaningful career that matters— are vital.”
Caddell Construction, founded on a strong foundation of government contracts in the U.S. and internationally, has successfully diversified into the commercial sector. Its steady growth continues to fuel unprecedented expansion across all business units, positioning Caddell as a leader in addressing the labor challenges impacting the industry.
