The Highlands School, a K-8 independent school that educates students with learning differences and achievement gaps, recently hosted its 22nd annual Big Event on Oct. 13th (5k race) and Oct. 14th at Maryland Golf and Country Club. This year’s event was attended by hundreds and raised over $300k, a record-breaking amount.
“We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received during this year’s Big Event. We can now send more deserving students in our community to The Highlands School so they can get the education they need,” said Head of School Claudia Nachtigal. “100% of funds raised go to scholarships, which means 100% stays local!”
The Big Event is The Highlands School’s largest annual fundraiser and one of the largest fundraisers in Harford County. The event features numerous tournaments and activities such as a golf tournament, pickleball tournament, tennis tournament, 5k race, and fun walk, as well as a dinner and auction. This year’s 5k race was sold out with 250 participants.
This year’s presenting sponsors included:
- Spartan Surfaces
- WSMT Insurance: Golf Sponsor
- BCV, Mallard Sportfishing, and the Sullivan family: Dinner Sponsors
- Altus Engineering: Tennis Sponsor
- Har-co Credit Union: Pickleball Sponsor
- APGFCU and Yorktowne Sports: 5k and Fun Walk Sponsors
“We could not be more thrilled that this year’s Big Event has set a new fundraising record! This achievement reflects the dedication and generosity of our entire community. The Highlands School changes lives, and The Big Event allows children who would otherwise be unable to attend our school to get an education that works for them,” said Board Treasurer and Big Event Chair Stuart Lucas.
“Thank you to everyone who attended our 22nd annual Big Event! We’re already looking forward to next year’s 23rd Big Event, which will be even bigger and better, and send more deserving children to The Highlands School!” said Highlands School Board President Bob McClelland.
