citybiz+ Nurses-Founded ‘The Nursing Beat’ Digital Newsletter Receives Seed Funding

The Nursing Beat, a Los Angeles-based digital newsletter with a reach of nearly a million nurses, has raised an undisclosed amount in seed funding from investors including Chicago-based Nurse Capital. Co-founder Hannah W. Berns, in a LinkedIn post, said the company has raised nearly $1 million so far.

The Nursing Beat was founded in 2019 by two ER nurses — Tamara AL-Yassin, who serves as the CEO, and Berns, who is chief operating officer. The weekday newsletter features content for nurses, produced predominantly by peers, addressing professional and personal issues. It takes pride in having a nurse at every level of the company, including its board.

Business Smarts

AL-Yassin and Berns met in a California hospital and worked together for several years, first joining hands to establish The Acknowledgement Collective, which handed out “Covid Warriors” lapel pins to honor nurses’ services during the Covid-19 pandemic. It donated proceeds of pin sales to Feeding America.

Prior to starting The Nursing Beat, AL-Yassin received an MBA from the University of Southern California. She has previously served as a healthcare consultant to The Baxter International. Berns, whose LinkedIn profile says she is based in New York, has a master’s degree in healthcare innovation from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She previously served as a part-time managing editor of Florence Health, a newsletter publisher and predecessor to The Nursing Beat in which AL-Yassin was CEO.

Nurse Capital co-founder Beth A. Brooks, a registered nurse, said her firm was not only providing capital to The Nursing Beat “but also deploying the strength of our carefully curated network of nurse executive leaders,” whose “expertise and insights” will be instrumental in accelerating the growth of the venture.

Tie-up With connectRN
The Nursing Beat has a partnership with connectRN, a Waltham, Mass.-based community of nurses, to enhance content and empower nurses. The goal of the partnership will be to reach expanded audiences, drive nurse-centric thought leadership, and create a sense of community and direction for nurses navigating a complicated industry, the company said last year.

“Our partnership with connectRN leverages our mutual networks to accelerate our shared goal of building a vibrant community of clinicians that are inspired and prepared to take on workforce challenges. We know that nurses are at the heart of healthcare,” said AL-Yassin said when announcing the tie-up.
