New development driving demand for increased shopping, dining options in Union County
JLL announced today that home interiors store Furniture to Go is set to open a new location at 1771 West Edgar Rd., Linden, New Jersey.
A family-owned and operated business based in Staten Island, Furniture to Go signed a long-term lease for 15,000 square feet of retail space to open its second store at the site, which was previously occupied by Planet of Wine.
JLL Managing Director David Townes and Vice President Alan Friedman represented both the retailer and the building’s owner, Sunkris Realty, LCC, as part of a strategic plan by ownership to expand its portfolio.
Townes and Friedman also represented Sunkris in its acquisition of 1601 W. Edgar Rd., a 13,000-square-foot, two-building retail property. T-Mobile and Mattress Warehouse currently occupy one building while Planet of Wine will relocate to the remaining 6,500 square feet in the second building in the first quarter of 2025 when Furniture to Go will open its newest location at 1771 West Edgar Rd.
“This was a multifaceted transaction with many moving parts,” said Townes. “Ultimately, we were able to achieve outcomes that position our clients to capitalize on exponential growth in Linden as the city pro-actively supports ongoing responsible development that is bringing hundreds of new homes and jobs to the city while supporting its tax base.”
The city’s proximity to the Port of Newark has made it an attractive logistics destination. Recent projects include Linden Logistics Center, the largest such facility in the port region employing some 3,000 people, and CODA Logistics and Distribution, which opened earlier this year at 1501 West Edgar Rd. Other developments include the $550 million transformation of the former General Motors plant into 36 acres of retail space, 59 acres of warehousing and a new hotel, creating an estimated 2,400 new jobs.
According to Friedman, several new housing developments – including the luxury, 334-unit One West Apartments on North Wood Avenue – are also underway or recently completed to accommodate the growing workforce and expand housing options in the region. “All of these new residents are, in turn, driving demand for more retail and we look forward to bring many more new shopping and dining options to the city,” said Friedman.
Located in the southeastern part of Union County, Linden is located about 13 miles from Manhattan and bordering Staten Island. The city is intersected by Routes 1 and 9 and served by Linden train station. According to the 2023 Major Commercial Development Report prepared by the Union County Economic Development Corporation (UCEDC), some two dozen $1-million-plus projects have recently been completed or are underway across the county.
