Krusinski Construction Company has completed interior buildout projects in Colorado and Maryland to support Santa Monica Seafood’s expansion of operations in the Mountain West and Mid-Atlantic regions. The two projects, totaling 58,000 square feet, are representative of and showcase Krusinski’s national capabilities for tenants with multiple locations and experience working with companies in the food processing, food manufacturing and freezer cooler sectors.
The new facilities are part of a strategic move by Santa Monica Seafood to expand its U.S. presence and allow for deliveries to 40 states in the U.S. within 48 hours of packing. Each of the buildouts converted existing industrial space into food production spaces with specific requirements for electrical power, water service and installation of specialized food processing and preparation equipment.
“These projects are an integral part of our efforts to support Santa Monica Seafood as the company expands its presence and capabilities to deliver goods quickly throughout the country,” said Andy Johnson, Executive Vice President, Krusinski Construction Company.
In the Mid-Atlantic region, the firm completed a 25,000-square-foot interior renovation at 7071 Dorsey Run Road in Elkridge, Maryland, located outside of Baltimore. Following partial demolition of the space, the facility was fitted with new underground plumbing, electrical service, floor drainage and sanitary lines. This infrastructure was essential in accommodating the complex cooling and freezer spaces, packaging lines, ambient rooms, and refrigerated equipment to work in temperatures as low as negative 10-degrees Fahrenheit.
Krusinski company also added epoxy floors for durability, a glycol system, and specialized lighting in the office space.
“Food processing facilities typically require a higher, more intense level of scrutiny and approval for health and safety-related concerns,” said Johnson. “Because of that, the project required a detailed and coordinated effort to complete the demolition of the previous space, rebuilding to Santa Monica’s and the local municipal specifications, installing equipment, and securing approval from inspectors.”
Krusinski Construction Company also completed the build-out of a 33,000-square-foot seafood processing and distribution facility in Thornton, Colorado for Santa Monica Seafood.
The scope of work for the Thornton project was similar to that completed in Baltimore. Following a partial demolition, Krusinski removed existing equipment and made dock modifications. Additional scope of work included reinforcing of existing steel, MEP for coolers/freezers; installing racking systems, refrigeration equipment, glycol in the freezer floor, and an ice machine platform; and adding new fire protection and fire alarm systems and polyurethane floors.
According to Johnson, while the local inspection process there was easier, Krusinski was able to improve its efficiencies and processes based on lessons learned from Baltimore.
In securing and completing assignments like these for Santa Monica Seafood, Krusinski has leveraged the resources and connections of the Citadel National Construction Group, an alliance of seven regional construction firms that serve 17 cities. This alliance allows Krusinski, a founding member, and other firms to tap into the resources and connections that might otherwise be difficult to identify with great confidence.
Other members of the Krusinski Construction team included: Ryan Lehman, Project Manager; Josh Peterson, Project Engineer; Andrew Dempsey, Project Superintendent; and Erin Anderson, Project Coordinator. Design Group Facility Solutions was the architect for both projects.
